Whether you travel for business or pleasure (or both), protecting your health is of paramount importance. TravelSafe aims to keep you well.
TravelSafe is a dedicated travel and tropical health clinic run by Dr Sarah Borwein. Dr Borwein holds an MSc in Infectious Diseases from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. She has lived and worked in China for 10 years and is an experienced and avid traveller herself.
We offer the following services:
Pre-Travel Consultations – An informed traveller is a healthy traveler! There are a lot of fascinating but nasty infectious diseases and other risks that can be encountered during travel…..but with a little preparation and some common-sense, you probably won’t get any of them. Forewarned is forearmed. Your pre-travel consultation will include a review of:
- Your itinerary or frequent travel destinations
- The activities you may be considering
- Your immunizations and recommendations for those that may be required
- Your overall health, including past and present medical conditions, risk factors, medications and allergies
- Malaria risk
- Other potential risks, such as rabies, Japanese encephalitis, travelers diarrhea, hepatitis and blood clots, and how to avoid them.
You will be provided with a schedule of recommended vaccinations, medication and information. First aid kits and safe needle kits are available.
You will also be given a personalized immunization booklet in which your vaccine history can be consolidated and future routine and travel related vaccines and medication can be logged.
Post Travel Screening – Have you been trekking in the Himalayas? Working in an orphanage in China? Swimming in the Mekong? It may be important to be screened for latentinfections so they don’t sneak up on you later. For some travelers, post-travel screening for sexually transmitted infections should also be done.
Prompt diagnosis facilitates rapid and simpler treatment of problems which, if left undiscovered may develop into serious illnesses that are debilitating and difficult to treat.
We offer comprehensive and non-judgmental assessment of your risks and a tailored post-travel screening package to reduce your risk of unpleasant surprise travel mementos. Some examples include:
- Parasites and worms such as malaria, schistosomiasis, giardia and amoebas
- Travel-related diarrhea, including more unusual causes such as cyclospora
- Viruses such as hepatitis A, B, C or E, HIV, Chikungunya Fever and Dengue Fever
- Tick-borne infections such as Lyme Disease
- Sexually transmitted infections
Post Travel Illness - Did you know that Malaria can present up to one year after leaving an endemic area? Fever after travel to the tropics is a medical emergency and requires a medical evaluation. Other common post-travel problems include rashes, diarrhea, respiratory infections and DVTs (blood clots). Whatever ails you, TravelSafe can help you get a quick and accurate diagnosis and prompt appropriate treatment.
Travel for International Adoption – When people travel for adoption, they are sometimes so focused on their new baby that they forget to protect their own health and that of other family members. Sometimes they bring home more than a baby! Outbreaks of hepatitis A, hepatitis B, measles and typhoid fever have occurred in this way. Before you go, make sure you have a travel health assessment and update your vaccinations.
Post adoption checkups – Children from underdeveloped countries should be checked for infectious diseases, lead toxicity and a number of other health risks. Often their vaccinations are incomplete or need to be repeated. Dr Borwein has lengthy experience working with orphanages in China and is familiar with evaluating newly adopted children. Make your child the healthiest he or she can be!
